A field-service tablet is not bought for its spec sheet. It is bought for the machines it has to talk to, and most of those machines were installed long before USB-C existed. Walk into a pump station or a packaging line built in 2009: the service port is nine-pin. A tablet either reaches it directly or it does not.
That constraint reshapes the comparison: it rules devices out on architecture, not on price.
Three Hotus industrial tablets face two different rivals: a consumer-grade rugged tablet from Samsung and a Windows industrial tablet from Teguar. The Hotus trio covers three postures — 13.3 inches for a cab, 10.1 inches for the bench, 6.5 inches for tight spaces.

Every one of these devices can run a modern app. Only three of them can run the software already installed on the customer's machines. Equipment vendors still ship configuration tools, diagnostics and firmware loaders as Windows x86 executables. Some are decades old, some need a specific driver, and none arrive as an Android package.
The Hotus ST13-J, ST11-M and SH6 all ship with Windows 10 or 11 Pro on x86 silicon, so those tools install the way they always have. The Teguar does too, though on a Celeron N5100 rather than the Core i5-8200Y in the ST11-M. The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5 Pro runs Android 15 on a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 — fast, efficient, and structurally unable to run a Windows x86 installer. Emulation is not a deployment plan for a fleet of service vans.
This is not a criticism of Samsung. It is a statement about who should buy it. If the job is forms, photos, signatures and a cloud app, Android is lighter and cheaper. If the job is talking to a controller, the operating system decides before the price does.
The second filter is physical. The Hotus ST11-M carries a native RS232 port and an RJ45 jack, plus pogo-pin contacts on the base and back that carry USB 2.0, charging and a second RS232 line for docking. The Teguar goes further with two COM ports — one RS-232 and one RS-485 — alongside a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and its USB complement includes two full-size USB 3.0 ports.
The Samsung has USB 3.2 Type-C, a 7-pin pogo connector and a 3.5mm jack. Everything else needs an adapter. One adapter is a nuisance; a van stocked with them becomes a maintenance programme. Each dongle adds a driver, a loose part and one more thing to fail.
In fairness: the ST13-J and SH6 pages list no serial or Ethernet ports. Only the ST11-M publishes them. If a native port is the criterion, specify the ST11-M and treat the others as screen-size choices.
Field service is three postures: a large cab-mounted panel for schematics, a 10-inch compromise for the bench, and a one-handed device inside a cabinet.
The three Hotus models map onto that: 13.3 inches at 1450g for fixed and vehicle use, 10.1 inches for general rounds, and 6.5 inches at 460g for single-handed work. Samsung offers one size at 10.1 inches and 683g. Teguar offers one size at 12.2 inches with VESA 100, forklift and vehicle mounts available.
Buying three sizes is not automatically waste. A fleet that standardises on one screen usually picks the middle and then lives with both limits: too small for a schematic, too big to hold while probing a terminal block.
Samsung wins on two things that matter every single day. The first is power: a 10,100mAh pack built from two 5,050mAh cells that are both user-removable and hot-swappable, so a technician can swap one at a time without shutting down. It also runs with no battery installed at all when fed adequate USB-C power, which suits kiosk and in-vehicle duty. No Hotus model here offers hot-swap.
The second is the software commitment: eight OS generations, with security updates listed through 31 May 2033. For a five-year fleet rollout, a published support date beats a faster processor. Add IP68, MIL-STD-810H, 683g and a $659-839 price, and the Tab Active5 Pro is hard to argue with — unless the job needs a serial port or Windows.
Teguar wins the industrial basics. Its 650-nit panel is the brightest here, ahead of Samsung's 600 and the 260-400 nits on the ST13-J. It pairs RS-232 and RS-485 with Gigabit Ethernet, survives a 4ft drop under MIL-STD-810G, runs at -20 to 60°C, and mounts by VESA 100 with forklift and vehicle docks. Its weak spot is the processor: the same Celeron N5100 as the ST13-J, with 8GB of DDR3L, 128GB of eMMC and six rated hours.
Three gaps are worth flagging. No model offers hot-swap, and the SH6 is rated at 4.5 hours from 5000mAh — a half-day device for anyone starting at seven. The ST13-J is rated at 260 or 400 nits, behind both rivals and a real problem in direct sun outside a shaded cab.
The third gap is certification detail. The ST13-J page lists IP65 and 1.2m drop resistance but no MIL-STD rating, while the related ST9-M page does cite MIL-STD-810G. Operating temperature and weight for the ST11-M are not published, and standard warranty across the Hotus range is one year. Anyone writing a tender should ask for those numbers in writing.
Choose by the connector first. For cloud forms, photos and signatures, the Samsung is cheaper, lighter and brighter than two of the three Hotus models, with support published to 2033. For Windows software and serial devices, it leaves the shortlist immediately.
Among the Windows options, the Teguar is the strongest single device: brightest screen, both serial protocols, Gigabit Ethernet and a 4ft rating, at $1,500-2,500 with modest Celeron performance. The Hotus answer is coverage rather than one winner: the ST11-M for port-equipped work with an optional 1000-nit screen, the ST13-J as a vehicle panel where size beats brightness, and the SH6 where only one hand is free. Published thermal range matches Teguar at -20°C.
None of these is the right tablet for every van, and any vendor claiming otherwise has not been in a plant room recently. Decide what the tablet must plug into, then decide the screen.
